24 Hour Embrace

Embracing each other
inside a blazing darkness
is last night's dream.

- Ch'oe Sung-ja, From a Place Where I Can't Call You as You

24 Hour Embrace is a performance that involves myself and initially, a stranger found through the Craigslist online listing service. From Dec 30th, 2008 at the stroke of midnight through the traditional New Year's Eve countdown (Jan 1st, 2009), we sustained a 24 hour embrace with no break. Although I received several replies from volunteers who were interested in this performance, I chose to embrace a 64 year-old man named Jerry Heller.

Visitors to the storefront gallery were welcome to join in the embrace after the 12th hour. The work was also video recorded onto 24 individual mini DV tapes.
